Pathways Learning Outcomes

In the table below, list at least two assignments you completed to address each of the five learning outcomes and discuss how they allowed you to meet the specified outcomes.

5 Learning ObjectivesAssignments Completed that Address Pathway Outcomes
1. Read and listen critically and analytically, including identifying an argument’s major assumptions and assertions and evaluating its supporting evidence.Something I’ve applied to my learning to help me listen and read critically is planning and class discussions. For example, if I knew I was going to have multiple assignments in the same week, I’d dedicate a day for each assignment. Doing this has helped because when I didn’t plan, I would be stressed about having to do so much work at once. It also helped because designating a day or a certain time to do my work helped me get my work done quicker, earlier, and more effectively, rather than it taking all night due to me waiting until the last minute. The class discussions helped because if I was confused, talking about it in class helped me get a better understanding.
2. Write clearly and coherently in varied, academic formats (such as formal essays, research papers, and reports) using standard English and appropriate technology to critique and improve one’s own and others’ texts. To write clearly and coherently, I used reflections and in-class writing to help. They helped because it gave me more practice on how to write and make it make sense. It also helped me to learn how to add enough details to my writing. Specifically, the first ungraded essay we had helped because it was unexpected and allowed me to practice writing in a limited amount of time.
3. Demonstrate research skills using appropriate technology, including gathering, evaluating, and synthesizing primary and secondary sources. The Hostos library workshop and assignment 2 assisted me in demonstrating research skills using appropriate technology. Assignment 2 helped because it was an inquiry-based paper, so I had to do a lot of research surrounding my choice of topic, which helped me become more familiar with the difference in things like an academic source, a popular media source, and newspaper articles. The workshop was beneficial to me because it increased my familiarity with using the online Hostos library as a research engine to help me find reliable sources to use in my papers and other classes.
4. Support a thesis with well-reasoned arguments, and communicate persuasively across a variety of contexts, purposes, audiences, and media.I was able to support a thesis with well-reasoned arguments and communicate persuasively with help from assignment 3 and the writing center workshop that covered what a thesis is and how to write one. Assignment 3 helped because it was more of a persuasive assignment, and I got to persuade my audience.
5. Formulate original ideas and relate them to the ideas of others by employing the conventions of ethical attribution and citation.Assignment 3, peer reviews, assisted me in developing original ideas and connecting them to those of others. I was able to compare and evaluate other people’s work as well as develop my own ideas thanks to both of these.
